Hi Friend!

I'm Betty

I enjoy reading, writing, puzzles, coffee, deep conversations, and long walks that allow my mind to wander. I strive to provide a safe space for others to share their stories, because I believe that healing begins when we are seen and heard.  Life is often messy and hard. I write about things that many of us carry quietly – addiction, healing, relationships, triggers, trauma, growth, connection.

I’m a work in progress, just like everyone else.  This blog is a place for honesty, curiosity, relating, and learning how to move through life with greater understanding and less shame knowing you are not alone.

I have three adult children who are living their best lives, and I live in Virginia with my three cats, Amelia, Ophelia, and Ledo.

and for a little fun,

here are 10 random facts about me:

  • I ask way too many questions.
  • I'm a recovering over-functioner.
  • I'm fascinated by how our bodies remember what our minds forget.
  • I have more books than shelf space.
  • I do my best thinking on long walks and my daily commute.
  • My faith keeps me grounded.
  • I'm a puzzle person.
  • Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road is my all-time favorite song.
  • Deep conversations and flowers are my love languages.
  • My weakness is chocolate and peanut butter.
  • I'm building a life that's fully mine.

My Writing Journey

I suppose my writing journey began in junior high with a small diary that had a lock on it. Every night, I would write in it and then tuck it safely between the mattresses on my bed. That diary held my hopes, fears, secrets, and disappointments. It was the first place where I learned that writing could hold what I did not yet know how to say out loud.

In high school, I felt that same pull again in my creative writing class. I knew then that I was meant to be a writer. I still have poems and stories I wrote back then, pieces of a younger version of me with such a beautiful imagination.

Then life got busy, and I did not write as much anymore. Still, I kept a journal with red hearts on the cover. I was dating someone at the time, and one evening I came home to find him holding my journal and reading it out loud. I was mortified. I felt exposed, ashamed, and betrayed. I ripped the journal from his hands, tore out the pages, ran to the dumpster, and threw it away.

Yes, I did end up marrying him. And after that, I never kept a paper journal again until the end of our marriage.
There were times, while lying in bed, when I would feel prompted to write. I believe they were from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I would even wake up in the middle of the night with that same quiet urging. I knew I was supposed to do something with my writing, even though I was not sure exactly what. Still, deep down, I knew I was meant to be a writer.

I have always struggled to express myself verbally, but writing gives me a way to share what is on my heart and mind. It helps me find the words I cannot always speak.

These days, journaling is how I process life and begin healing. I enjoy looking back at my journals and seeing the growth I have made. It has become a way of finding myself again. What once felt unsafe now feels sacred again. Writing gives me a private place to tell the truth, to remember who I am, and to keep becoming who I am meant to be.
My hope is that somewhere in my words, you will find something that resonates with you and offers you hope. If there is something you would like me to write about, drop me a note. I would love to hear from you. Happy reading!
